A blank answer and a wrong answer cost you exactly the same.

October 16, 20261 min read

You are working through the listening test, one question resists, and you leave it aside so you do not get it wrong. The reflex comes from somewhere else: plenty of exams take points off for a mistake. The TCF Canada is not one of them, and that caution costs you points instead of saving any.

The trap

A wrong answer and no answer are worth the same thing: 0 points. There is no negative marking on the TCF. Leaving a box empty spares you no penalty — it only removes your one chance in four.

Both moves are scored identically. Only one of them keeps a chance of scoring.

Key points

  • Listening test: 39 multiple-choice questions, 4 options, one correct answer.
  • Wrong answer and blank answer: 0 points either way, no penalty.
  • The recording plays once and you cannot go back: a blank box is final.

Why so many candidates make this mistake

The reflex is imported from exams where a mistake takes points off. There you learn to answer only when you are sure, and the habit stays. A second one sits on top of it, picked up from written papers: flag the question and come back to it later. In the listening test that return never happens, because the recording has already moved on without you.

How to avoid the trap

The rule fits in one sentence: no box stays empty, ever. When you hesitate, you rule out what you can and you commit within the second. That move trains like any other. Run topics in the exam format, on a single listen, and count the questions you used to abandon for no reason.
