On test day the audio plays once. In practice, you replay everything.

October 31, 20261 min read

You open a listening topic, answer fifteen or so questions, then close the tab. Nothing stops you: in practice mode you can pause and replay as often as you like. That is precisely what the real test will never allow.

The trap

In practice, every recording can be replayed. On test day it plays once, and the 39 questions move at the pace of the recording for 35 minutes — not at yours.

An interrupted practice run trains your ear, never your ability to hold 35 minutes with no safety net.

Key points

  • 39 multiple-choice questions, 35 minutes, one correct answer per question.
  • Our last 30 days: 371 listening practice runs started, 149 finished.
  • One topic done in a single sitting, no pause and no replay, teaches more than three abandoned ones.

Why so many candidates stop halfway

Practice mode is comfortable by design: you can stop, go back, replay a sentence three times. Each replay eventually hands you the right answer, so the session feels like a success. That score is what you remember, not the fact that the real test offers none of those crutches.

How to turn a topic into a real rehearsal

Pick a topic, start the clock and go to the end with no pause and no replay, even if you guess half of it. The useful number is not your score: it is the point where your concentration gives out. Until you have measured it once, you do not know what is costing you points on test day.

One topic taken to the end tells you where you lose your footing. Three abandoned ones tell you nothing.
