Speaking Task 2: 3 min 30 to ask questions, not to answer them

April 26, 20261 min read

You assume the examiner will question you. Wrong. In Task 2, it is the opposite: they give you a scenario (finding an apartment, signing up for a class, booking a trip) and you have to interview them. Many rush this task, even though it counts as much as the others.

The trap

You have 3 min 30 to get specific information by asking varied questions. Most candidates ask 2 or 3 flat questions and then run out of ideas.

The examiner replies briefly. You have to drive the exchange and dig deeper.

Key points

  • 2 minutes of prep time: use it to list your questions, not to think during the actual task.
  • Closed questions (yes/no) cap your score. Open questions unlock CLB 7 and above.
  • Failing to obtain the requested information means a failed task, even with correct French.

Why this task throws so many candidates off

Your French learning trained you to answer, not to ask. Under test-day pressure, your brain defaults to that reflex. You start describing your situation instead of asking questions. You waste time, get little information, and the score drops.

How to build the right reflex

List 10 typical scenarios: renting, classes, travel, health, work. For each one, prepare 8 varied questions in 2 minutes flat. Our speaking tests with corrections score each task structure precisely, Task 2 included.
