Express Entry reform: your weakest skill is now your ceiling

May 1, 20261 min read

IRCC just announced a major Express Entry overhaul. The three streams (FSW, CEC, FST) are merging into a single class. And with them, language requirements are changing. The new threshold: CLB 6 across all 4 skills. No exceptions.

The trap

Previously, some streams accepted CLB 4 or 5 on certain skills. A CLB 8 in reading could offset a CLB 5 in listening. That will no longer be the case.

70% of candidates identify listening comprehension as their weakest skill.

Key points

  • CLB 6 mandatory across all 4 skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
  • A single result below CLB 6 makes the entire application inadmissible, regardless of other scores.
  • Listening comprehension is the skill where most candidates fall below the threshold.

Why this reform catches well-prepared candidates off guard

Many candidates focus their preparation on their strengths. They aim for CLB 9 in reading or CLB 8 in written expression. But with this reform, the weakest link decides. A CLB 5 in listening comprehension cancels out all the effort invested elsewhere.

Step one: identify your weakest link

Before piling on exercises, run a diagnostic. Our free listening comprehension tests assess your real CLB level in 30 minutes. You will know immediately whether you are above or below the critical threshold.

Public consultations on the reform begin this spring. The time to check your listening CLB is now.
